Prof. Saber and Prof. El- Dabaa gained a patent through STDF

In a scientific achievement that adds to the record of research successes of Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, the Egyptian Intellectual Property Authority has approved a patent submitted to the Patent Office, funded by the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF), in the field of producing genetically engineered therapeutic proteins using biotechnology.

Despite its strategic location on the Nile and its long-standing association with schistosomiasis treatment, few are aware that the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI) stands among the leading medical and research centers in the Middle East and Africa. Operating under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the institute is equipped with 300 beds, five operating theatres, and offers 24/7 care in advanced specialties such as hepatology, gastroenterology, and nephrology. TBRI collaborates with international entities including the World Health Organization and the European Commission, offering advanced postgraduate degrees to students from across Africa and Asia. The institute depends on community support to secure modern medical equipment and vital medications beyond the scope of its official funding—making it a model institution worthy of national and international recognition

The protocol aims to establish collaboration between Theodor Bilharz Research Institute and the Faculty of Medicine – Mansoura National University to nurture a new generation of researchers in the medical and health fields. The objective is to promote scientific advancement without compromising environmental factors. As the largest institute of its kind in Egypt and the region specializing in scientific research, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, together with the Faculty of Medicine, possesses the training and research tools necessary to achieve this goal. The protocol seeks to prepare distinguished young individuals equipped with the knowledge and specialized skills needed within a framework of equality, mutual cooperation, and the exchange of privileges between both parties.

Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI), received Dr. Walid El-Zawawy, Secretary of the Council of Research Centers, Institutes, and Authorities, during his field visit to the institute, which took place on the sidelines of his attendance at the TBRI Board of Directors meeting. During the visit, Dr. Abdel Aziz accompanied Dr. El-Zawawy on an extensive tour of several departments and units that have recently undergone comprehensive development. These included the operating theaters and the organ transplantation unit, which has been reopened after undergoing major upgrades aimed at enhancing medical performance and providing advanced therapeutic services. The visit also covered the internal medicine and surgical intensive care units, which have been equipped according to the latest medical systems and technologies to improve operational efficiency and service quality, ensuring the highest standards of healthcare for patients.

As part of the efforts to strengthen scientific and research collaboration between academic institutions and research centers, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI) has signed a joint cooperation protocol with the Faculty of Medicine – Mansoura National University. The agreement is intended to support research, training, and specialized medical education.

As part of efforts to support academic advancement and develop research and scientific policies, and under the patronage of Professor Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of  Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, the Institute held a specialized lecture on the new promotions regulations. These regulations outline the conditions and requirements for the promotion of researchers within research centers, institutes, and organizations. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Wafaa Kandeel, former Director of the Institute and Chair of the Higher Promotions Committee.

The Theodor Bilharz Research Institute announces the opening of applications for a supplementary batch of doctors assigned by the Ministry of Health, Class of 2022, for secondment to various clinical laboratory departments within the Institute. This is subject to the following eligibility criteria and application procedures: Eligibility Criteria for the Supplementary Secondment – Class of 2022 Graduate Status: The applicant must be a graduate of a Faculty of Medicine, Class of 2022 only.

On the sidelines of the 13th Scientific Meeting on Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Prof. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, honored the team of the Media Office of the Institute, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to presenting an honorable media image of the Institute's activities through various media. The recognition included Ms. Mai Mohammed Reda and Mr. Ahmed Magdy, in recognition of their effective role in providing integrated media services, including the production of professional videos documenting the Institute's activities, artistic designs and media propaganda, and the preparation and dissemination of news and reports through various media, digital platforms and social media,which contributed to showing the Institute distinctive image worthy of its position as a leading research institution.

Under the patronage of H.E. Prof. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and within the framework of the scientific cooperation agreement between Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI), Beaujon Hospital, Paris Cité University, and Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine – Cairo University, TBRI hosted the 13th Egyptian-French Scientific Meeting in Hepatogastroenterology on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in “Ahmed El-Garim Hall” at the Institute. In his opening remarks, Prof. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of TBRI, emphasized that the institute’s continued organization of this meeting for the thirteenth consecutive year reflects its commitment to being a leading scientific platform for integrated research and specialized medical training.
